As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best tantan
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport tantan
But there are no Blacks in your sport tantan
“They’re going to want to kill you tantan
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on tantan
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car tantan
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events tantan
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all tantan
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself tantan
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed tantan
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride tantan
“But I enjoyed it tantan
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun tantan
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me tantan
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating tantan
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs tantan
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality tantan
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 tantan
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” tantan
But to this interview, he’s late tantan
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems tantan
It was the racing way or the highway tantan
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas tantan
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill tantan
That’s all that was discussed in the family tantan
We didn’t discuss any other sport tantan
“I was lucky, I think tantan
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be tantan
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did tantan
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One tantan
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s tantan
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too tantan
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril tantan
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer tantan
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time tantan
Ribbs made history in an F1 test in 1986 and in the Indy 500 in 1991 (Getty)“All that mattered was I thought of myself as a race driver,” he says tantan
“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team tantan
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders tantan
“Sure tantan
I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done tantan
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it tantan
But for me? It was about going fast tantan
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali tantan
“What I admired about him the most was not his tantan boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali tantan
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled tantan
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while tantan
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about tantan
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs tantan
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience tantan
The attention went off the chart tantan
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods tantan
“He’s a very kind man tantan
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way tantan
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair tantan
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with tantan
Willy T Ribbs was treated differently tantan
”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world tantan
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made tantan
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says tantan
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One tantan
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ tantan

Warren Gatland is to remain as Wales head coach and lead them to the 2027 World Cup tantan
Gatland placed his future in the hands of the Welsh Rugby Union following his side’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Argentina on Saturday tantan
The 60-year-old New Zealander, pointing to a break-up clause in his contract, said: “If the union want to get rid of me, that’s up to them tantan
”But asked at a press conference on Wednesday whether he will stay through to the next World Cup in Australia, Gatland said: “Absolutely tantan
That’s the plan tantan
“I had a joke with Nigel (Walker, interim WRU chief executive) before and said ‘You can’t get rid of me’ tantan
“I think my contract said if we didn’t get out of the pool they had a clause that said they could get rid of me tantan
I said: ‘If you do want to pay me off that’s up to you’ tantan
But I’m excited what we can do as a group tantan
”Gatland was joined at the press conference by Walker, the former Wales wing who has stood in as WRU interim CEO since the end of January and will become the executive director of rugby at the start of next year tantan
Walker said: “To be successful in international sport you have to have good coaches and good players tantan
“To be a good coach you need experience, miles on the clock, understand your craft, get your message across to players, and players have to trust you tantan
“You’ve seen the growth in the squad in a relatively small period of time and, like Warren, I’m really excited what the next four years can bring tantan
“We’ve got something to build on and we know we can grow the standard of the squad to an even greater level we saw over the last four or five weeks tantan
”Wales were written off by many before the World Cup after a difficult 12 months, which saw them suffer an embarrassing defeat to Georgia and head coach Wayne Pivac sacked in December tantan
Gatland, who coached Wales tantan between 2007 and 2019, returned to oversee a Six Nations campaign that produced only one victory after the players had threatened to take strike action over contractual issues tantan
Ken Owens, captain in that campaign, described Wales as the “laughing stock” of world rugby, but Gatland believes Wales will move forward after topping their World Cup pool with wins over Australia, Fiji, Georgia and Portugal tantan
“We’ve got an opportunity to bring some youngsters in and build on the cycle to 2027 with players having 50, 60, 70 caps behind them,” said Gatland, who became the first coach in France to lead a team to four World Cup quarter-finals tantan
“There’s also an opportunity for us to build some closer relationships with the regions and some of the changes with coaches and personnel there, and that hasn’t always been the case in the past tantan
“Often those relationships have been quite fractured because of things that were going on tantan between the regions and the unions, and we got dragged into it tantan
”Wales play the Barbarians in Cardiff on November 4 as a tribute to their former captain Alun Wyn Jones, who retired from international rugby in May tantan
Players based in France and England will not be selected as the game falls outside the international window tantan
Gatland confirmed five players – Dan Biggar, Gareth Davies, Josh Adams, Liam Williams and Louis Rees-Zammit – are injured and would have missed out on a World Cup semi-final against New Zealand this Friday had they beaten Argentina tantan
Biggar has retired from international rugby and played his last game for Wales, while Taulupe Faletau’s future will become clearer next year tantan
The 32-year-old British and Irish Lions number eight broke his arm against Georgia and missed the Argentina defeat tantan
Gatland said: “I spoke to Taulupe before he left France and said ‘get that arm fixed’ tantan
We’ll sit down then and talk about what he wants to do over the next few years in terms of playing tantan
